The incident unfolded Saturday during a joint U.S.-Syrian patrol and “key leader engagement” near the historic city of Palmyra in Homs province. A lone gunman, suspected of ISIS affiliations, opened fire before being killed by partner forces.

Trump posted on Truth Social: “This was an ISIS attack against the U.S., and Syria, in a very dangerous part of Syria… The President of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, is extremely angry and disturbed by this attack. There will be very serious retaliation.” He later told reporters: “We will retaliate.”

First U.S. Fatalities Since Assad’s Fall

This marks the first American combat deaths in Syria since the 2024 overthrow of Bashar al-Assad. It occurs amid warming U.S.-Syria ties, including Syria’s recent joining of the anti-ISIS coalition and al-Sharaa’s White House visit.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the details, noting the wounded are recovering. Syrian officials condemned the “cowardly” act and reported prior warnings about the suspect.

With 900-1,500 U.S. troops in Syria focused on preventing ISIS resurgence, the ambush highlights lingering threats from sleeper cells despite the group’s 2019 territorial defeat.

Trump’s firm response signals potential airstrikes or enhanced operations. As investigations proceed, the incident tests evolving U.S.-Syria cooperation in a volatile region.
