Some of us at As The Donald Turns have raised children, as have some of our readers. We probably all remember the time when our kids were little, and they would be trying to defend something they did. In the process, they would be digging themselves an even bigger hole. That was usually the time to stop and strongly urge them to go have some “Quiet Time.” With the title for this episode, you can probably figure out where we are going with this.

As The Donald Turns; Quiet Time

  • Donald continues to be embroiled in a spat with Tennessee Republican Senator Bob Corker. Politics aside, Corker is generally held in high regard by his colleagues for his years of public service and occasional bi-partisanship. Donald and Corker have been going at it over Twitter for weeks now. The latest came Monday and Tuesday when Corker called out the president and Donald responded with the “dog catcher” insult he used every week on various people in the campaign.

Twitter Truth

“Same untruths from an utterly untruthful president. #AlertTheDaycareStaff”

“Bob Corker, who helped President O give us the bad Iran Deal & couldn’t get elected dog catcher in Tennessee, is now fighting Tax Cuts…”

Now, Corker actually voted against the Iran deal, but Donald has never let facts get in the way of what he wants to say. It is usually at that point that some “quiet time” is in order. But not for Donald.

“…Corker dropped out of the race in Tennesse when I refused to endorse him, and now is only negative on anything Trump. Look at his record!”

Please note, that is a direct quote. We know how to spell Tennessee. President Trump apparently does not. Anyway, it’s been proven that Trump offered to endorse Corker for re-election and tried to talk him out of resigning. His record of voting with Donald is slim, but that is the case with everyone in both houses of Congress. Despite Donald’s claims of great legislative victories, most of the bills have been for things like naming post offices after people and approving advisory memos. His administration has only passed the VA Reform Bill in terms of major legislation in the first nine months of his presidency.

“Sen. Corker is the incompetent head of the Foreign Relations Committee, & look how poorly the U.S. has done. He doesn’t have a clue”

Donald’s Reality

The truth is that Donald may not like Corker, but as the head of the Foreign Relations Committee, he needs him. Corker is going to be there until January 2019. Donald could use some “quiet time” to settle down. They were, afterall scheduled to have lunch together, as Donald was going to Capitol Hill to meet with GOP members of Congress.

It was Corker, however, who refused to sit in time out. During a morning news show interview, he said, “For young people to be watching … someone of this mentality… is something that is debasing to our country.  The president undermines our secretary of State, raises tensions in the area by virtues of the tweets that he sends out and I would just like for him to just leave it to the professionals for a while and see if we can do something that is constructive for our country, the region and the world.”

Oh, to be a fly in the room, for that lunch. Something as simple as, “Hey Corker, pass the salt,” could have led to legislative meltdowns.

The Nation’s Embarrassment

  • Of course, Donald’s biggest need for quiet time has come in his tweets about Myeisha Johnson, Representative Frederica Wilson of Florida and the fallen soldier Sgt. La David Johnson. We won’t re-hash everything here because everyone knows the story by now. The President of the United States embarrassed himself and belittled the highest office in the land.

You may not like what Mrs. Johnson said, but she is a mother of two, with another on the way, who lost her husband in combat duty. She waited three weeks and then finally heard from you as she was arriving at Dover to receive the casket with her late husband, the father of her children. You may not like what she said, but for the love of country, shut up and quit sniping back at her on Twitter. Act like a grown man and resist the temptation to get in the last word.

You may not like Representative Wilson and her hats and big flowers on her clothes, but she has been a close family friend to the deceased for more than a decade. She was there to comfort the grieving widow. You may not have liked her public response to your phone call. That is fair. But, for the sake of the top job in the country, do not send your henchman, Chief of Staff Kelly, out there to tear her down with three-year-old stories that were then proven to be false.

You may not like how this made you look but do not send out your phony surrogates like “Sheriff” David Clarke who took to Twitter to rip the hats that Representative Wilson wears as though that makes her points wrong.  And from a guy who lives in Wisconsin but wore a cowboy hat and had his Sheriff’s uniform adorned with fake medals? Child, please. You are in serious need of some “quiet time.”

Wednesday, as he was boarding Marine One, he stopped to reassure the press that he was very nice to Mrs. Johnson and remembered the soldier’s name because he has, “One of the best memories of any president in history.” He reminded us that he went to a major Ivy League school, because when you are 72 years old, where you went 50 years ago clearly is so important. He said, “It is the press that makes me sound uncivil.” Yeah, because nothing he tweets does that. Hey, Mr. President. Please get on that helicopter for some “ssshhh time.”

Hey, That Sounds Like Fun

  • Hey, speaking of quiet…here is an event that was quiet. A campaign fundraiser for Omar Navarro. He is running for congress in the CA 43rd.  That seat is currently held by Maxine Waters. Navarro has as much chance of unseating Waters as does my cat Gus…..and he is a write-in only candidate.

Gus the cat, pondering the potential to be a write-in candidate for congress.

None the less, there was a gala fundraiser for Navarro. It was star-studded. Convicted felon and former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio was an honored guest. Some contestant from Survivor was on the bill. There was a singer who has zero hits, but was recognized for wearing a MAGA dress during campaign events.

Here is what made the event all the more interesting. The event at Donald’s private golf club in Rancho Palos Verdes. You know where the event was not? In the 43rd Congressional District that Mr. Navarro wants to represent.

The district covers Inglewood and Hawthorne right where they edge up to Compton. It includes part of East Torrance right where it hits Carson and Harbor City, (don’t let the pleasant sound of the name fool you). Navarro and his GOP advisers knew he would never draw the kind of donors he wants by holding the event in a part of the city where he does not even want to have to go. Speaking of not going, media reports from the event indicate that fewer than 100 “donors” showed up.

You know what those people got for their money? Lots of “quiet time?
